Ordering Recommendation
Useful for general screening in contexts of compliance and/or abuse. For follow-up testing of a presumptive result, confirmatory testing by mass spectrometry is available. For automatic reflex testing on all presumptive positives, Ethyl Glucuronide Screen with Reflex to Quantitation, Urine (2007912) is recommended. Results do not accurately correlate with amount or frequency of ethanol use.

Interpretive Data
Screening results are obtained by immunoassay. Results obtained by immunoassay are not confirmed unless confirmation testing is specifically requested.
Ethyl glucuronide is a direct metabolite of ethanol and can be detected in urine up to 80 hours after ethanol ingestion. This immunoassay cutoff for positive is set at 500 ng/mL.
This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by ARUP Laboratories. It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. This test was performed in a CLIA certified laboratory and is intended for clinical purposes.
