Ordering Recommendation

Use to determine in-vitro susceptibility of cultured herpes simplex virus (HSV) isolates to foscarnet. Testing requires HSV isolate not available from direct patient specimens. If direct patient specimen is sent for testing, add Herpes Simplex Virus Culture (0065005).

Specimen Required

Patient Preparation

Isolate from cell culture (3-4+ positivity).

Specimen Preparation

Isolate from cell culture (3-4+ positivity). Place each specimen in an individually sealed bag.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Room temperature. Also acceptable: Refrigerated and frozen on dry ice.

Unacceptable Conditions

Ambient: 48 hours; Refrigerated: 72 hours; Frozen at -70°C: 1 month

Less than 100 µg/mL 

Interpretive Data

A value of greater than or equal to 100 µg/mL suggests resistance.

A processing fee will be billed for isolates that fail to grow to 3-4+ positivity as indicated in the specimen requirements.
For specimens other than isolates, herpes simplex virus (HSV) culture (test code 0065005) will be performed at ARUP. Additional charges apply.
