Urine screening test for determining active exposure to nicotine and compliance with smoking-cessation programs. For determination of active or passive nicotine use, or for differentiation between nicotine replacement and tobacco use, Nicotine and Metabolites, Urine, Quantitative (0092356) is preferred.

Interpretive Data

Cotinine is a metabolite of nicotine and may be detected up to seven days after nicotine exposure. The cutoff is set at 100 ng/mL to detect active exposure (smoking).  This test will not distinguish between tobacco use and nicotine replacement therapy.
