Kappa Free Light Chains, CSF
Ordering Recommendation
Used to assess for multiple sclerosis and other inflammatory central nervous system (CNS) diseases. This test is a quantitative alternative to the oligoclonal band assay.
A reflexive panel, CSF Kappa Free Light Chains With Reflex to Oligoclonal Banding (3021031), is also available. It screens for the presence of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) kappa free light chains and reflexes to oligoclonal band testing when results are borderline or positive.

Interpretive Data
Results between 0.33 and 1.09 mg/L are considered equivocal, while results greater than or equal to 1.10 mg/L are considered positive. These findings reflect CSF-specific immunoglobulin synthesis. They are not specific for multiple sclerosis and may also be detected in patients with other neurologic diseases (autoimmune, infectious, inflammatory, cerebrovascular, and paraneoplastic). Consider additional CSF testing such as oligoclonal banding if clinically indicated.
| Negative: | Less than 0.33 mg/L |
| Equivocal: | 0.33 mg/L-1.09 mg/L |
| Positive: | Greater than 1.09 mg/L |
