Ordering Recommendation

Preferred reflex test for screening and confirming HCV in at-risk individuals. If positive, reflexes to quantitative HCV NAAT to confirm HCV infection.

Specimen Required

Patient Preparation

Serum Separator Tube (SST). Also acceptable: Lavender (EDTA) or Pink (K2EDTA).

Specimen Preparation

Separate from cells within 6 hours of collection. Transfer 2.5 mL serum or plasma to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 1.5 mL)
This test requires a dedicated transport tube submitted only for HCV AB QR testing.

Unacceptable Conditions

Specimens containing particulate material. Severely hemolyzed, heat-inactivated, or lipemic specimens. Heparinized plasma.


After separation from cells: Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 5 days; Frozen: 2 months (avoid freeze/thaw cycles)

This assay should not be used for blood donor screening, associated re-entry protocols, or for screening Human Cell, Tissues, and Cellular and Tissue-Based Products (HCT/P).

Compliance Category



If the anti-HCV screening result is low positive or high positive, the Hepatitis C Virus by Quantitative NAAT will be added. Additional charges apply.
