New York DOH Approval Status
This test is New York DOH approved.
Specimen Required
Patient Preparation

Timing of specimen collection: Pre-dose (trough) draw - At steady state concentration.

Collect

Plain red. Also acceptable: Lavender (K2 or K3EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA).

Specimen Preparation

Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 2 mL serum or plasma to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 1.5 mL)

Storage/Transport Temperature

CRITICAL FROZEN. Separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered

Unacceptable Conditions

Whole blood. Gel separator tubes, light blue (citrate), or yellow (SPS or ACD solution).

Remarks
Stability

After separation from cells: Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: 1 month

Reference Interval
Therapeutic Range 50-100 ng/mL
Toxic Level Greater than 400 ng/mL

Interpretive Data

The therapeutic range is based on serum pre-dose (trough) draw at steady-state concentration. Toxic concentrations may cause mental confusion, cardiac abnormalities and seizures. Concentrations below 25 ng/mL may have no effect. This method does not quantify the major metabolite, hydroxybupropion.

Compliance Statement B: For laboratory developed tests not using a RUO kit, and for FDA approved, cleared or 510(k) exempt assays with alterations. This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by ARUP Laboratories. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved or cleared this test; however, FDA clearance or approval is not currently required for clinical use.
