Patient Preparation
Collect
Plain red. Also acceptable: Green (sodium heparin).
Specimen Preparation
Separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL serum to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.2 mL)
Storage/Transport Temperature
Refrigerated.
Unacceptable Conditions
Lipemic specimens. Gel separator tubes are not acceptable, regardless of the tube additive.
Remarks
Lipemic specimens may cause an underestimation of Theophylline level
Stability
After separation from cells: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 8 days; Frozen: 3 months
Reference Interval
0-5 months: 6.0-12.0 µg/mL
Toxic: 20.1 µg/mL or greater
6 months and older: 10.0-20.0 µg/mL
Toxic: 25.1 µg/mL or greater
