Ordering Recommendation

Determine the Fredrickson classification of individuals with hyperlipoproteinemia. Most useful for identifying the Type III phenotype.

Specimen Required

Patient Preparation

Patient should be fasting for 12-15 hours.

Collect

Serum separator tube or plain red.

Specimen Preparation

Transfer 1 mL serum to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.5 mL) Store and ship refrigerated. DO NOT FREEZE.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Refrigerated.

Unacceptable Conditions

Heparin and frozen samples. Body fluids.

Interpretive Data

An HDL cholesterol less than 40 mg/dL is low and constitutes a coronary heart disease risk factor.  An HDL cholesterol greater than 60 mg/dL is a negative risk factor for coronary heart disease.
