Aerobic Organism Identification
Ordering Recommendation
Identify aerobic bacterial isolates. For suspected agents of bioterrorism, notify state department of health and refer isolates to state laboratory for identification. Susceptibilities on agents of bioterrorism are not performed at ARUP. For identification by 16S rDNA sequencing only, refer to Organism Identification by 16S rDNA Sequencing (0060720). For identification AND susceptibility testing, refer to Aerobic Organism Identification with Reflex to Susceptibility (0065070).
New York DOH Approval Status
Specimen Required
Actively growing organism, in pure culture.
Transport sealed container with pure culture on agar slant or on a swab in bacterial transport media. Place each specimen in an individually sealed bag.
Room temperature. If culture is suspected of being a microorganism identified on the IATA list as an infectious substance affecting humans, submit specimen according to Infectious Substance, Category A, shipping guidelines.
Mixed cultures or non-viable organisms.
Specimen source required. Indicate suspected pathogen.
Ambient: 1 week; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable

Reference Interval
Complete identification of clinically significant isolates.
Interpretive Data
Depends on Specimen/Source/Method
Note
Testing performed and associated charges billed depends on specimen source and type of organism suspected. An additional processing fee will be billed for all mixed cultures as indicated in the specimen requirements.
For suspected agents of bioterrorism, Salmonella, or Shigella, notify your state department of health and refer isolates to your state laboratory for identification. Susceptibilities on agents of bioterrorism are not performed at ARUP.
For identification by 16S rDNA sequencing only, order Organism Identification by 16s rDNA Sequencing (ARUP test code 0060720). For identification AND susceptibility testing order Aerobic Organism Identification with Reflex to Susceptibility (ARUP test code 0065070). For identification of Shiga-like toxin producing E. coli, order E. coli Shiga-like toxin by EIA (ARUP test code 0060047).
