Ordering Recommendation

Qualitative nucleic acid amplification testing for parvovirus B19. For plasma and serum specimens, Parvovirus B19 by Quantitative PCR (2012043) is preferred to establish a diagnosis, differentiate low-level persistence from clinically relevant infection, monitor response to treatment, and predict relapse in immunocompromised hosts.

Specimen Required

Patient Preparation
Collect

Lavender (EDTA), pink (K2EDTA), or serum separator tube (SST).
Also acceptable: Amniotic fluid, CSF, tissue, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue, synovial fluid, or bone marrow collected in lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA).

Specimen Preparation

Separate serum or plasma from cells. Transfer 1 mL serum, plasma, bone marrow, amniotic fluid, CSF, or synovial fluid to a sterile container. (Min: 0.5 mL)
Tissue: Transfer fresh tissue to a sterile container and freeze immediately.
Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue: Transport in a Tissue Transport Kit (ARUP supply #47808), available online through eSupply using ARUP Connect(TM) or contact ARUP Client Services at 800-522-2787.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Preferred transport temps:
Bone Marrow: Refrigerated.
FFPE Tissue: Room temperature.
All others: Frozen.

Unacceptable Conditions

Heparinized specimens, tissues in optimal cutting temperature compound.
