Ordering Recommendation

Alkaline phosphatase may be increased in the CSF of patients with intracranial germ cell tumors. When increased, isoenzyme testing can identify if a heat-stable isoenzyme (ie, germ cell or placental) is present but cannot quantify the amount of activity.

Specimen Required

Patient Preparation
Collect

CSF.

Specimen Preparation

Transfer 2 mL CSF to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube and refrigerate or freeze ASAP or within 2 hours. (Min: 1 mL)

Storage/Transport Temperature

Refrigerated or frozen.

Unacceptable Conditions

Specimens collected in EDTA, potassium oxalate, sodium citrate, or sodium fluoride. Grossly hemolyzed or lipemic specimens
