Specimen Required
Patient Preparation
Timing of specimen collection: Pre-dose (trough) draw - At steady state concentration.  
Collect
Plain red. Also acceptable: Lavender (K2 or K3EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA).  
Specimen Preparation
Separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 2 mL serum or plasma to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 1 mL)
SST or PST
: Separate serum or plasma from gel within 6 hours and hold at room temperature or separate within 2 hours and store refrigerated.  
Storage/Transport Temperature
Refrigerated.  
Unacceptable Conditions
Whole blood. Light blue (citrate) or yellow (SPS or ACD solution).

Interpretive Data
Toxic concentrations may cause drowsiness, coma, hypotension, tachycardia and seizures. Large daily doses of chlorpromazine may cause phenothiazine sudden death syndrome.
