Patient Preparation

Collect
Actively growing organism, in pure culture.
Specimen Preparation
Transport sealed container with pure culture on agar slant or on a swab in bacterial transport media. Place each specimen in an individually sealed bag.
Storage/Transport Temperature
Room temperature. If culture is suspected of being a microorganism identified on the IATA list as an infectious substance affecting humans, submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category A, shipping guidelines.
Unacceptable Conditions
Mixed cultures or non-viable organisms.
Remarks
Specimen source required. Indicate suspected pathogen. For suspected agents of bioterrorism, Salmonella, or Shigella, notify your state department of health and refer isolates to your state laboratory for identification. Susceptibilities on agents of bioterrorism are not performed at ARUP.
Stability
Ambient: 1 week; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable

Complete identification of clinically significant isolates.
Interpretive Data

Note
Testing performed and associated charges billed depends on specimen source and type of organism suspected. An additional processing fee will be billed for all mixed cultures as indicated in the specimen requirements.

For suspected agents of bioterrorism, Salmonella, or Shigella, notify your state department of health and refer isolates to your state laboratory for identification. Susceptibilities on agents of bioterrorism are not performed at ARUP.

For identification by 16S rDNA sequencing only, order Organism Identification by 16s rDNA Sequencing (ARUP test code 0060720). For identification AND susceptibility testing order Aerobic Organism Identification with Reflex to Susceptibility (ARUP test code 0065070). For identification of Shiga-like toxin producing E. coli, order E. coli Shiga-like toxin by EIA (ARUP test code 0060047).
CPT Code(s)
