Ordering Recommendation
Preferred test is one of the combined nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT) [ie, Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae by Transcription-Mediated Amplification (TMA) (0060241)]. May be used to detect Neisseria gonorrhoeae, especially if NAAT has not been validated for a particular specimen type.

Collect
Any body site or fluid.  
Specimen Preparation
Do not refrigerate specimen.
Inoculated Modified Thayer Martin Agar (MTM):
Transfer to a sealed plastic bag with CO2 generating tablet.
Swab:
Place in Eswab transport media (ARUP Supply #45877) available online through eSupply using ARUP
Connect™ or contact ARUP Client Services at (800) 522-2787. OR Place in Amies with charcoal.
Fluids:
Transfer to a sterile container.
*Submit slide for Gram stain on male urethra specimens.  
Storage/Transport Temperature
CRITICAL ROOM TEMPERATURE.
Incubate MTM at 35°C if delay occurs.  
Unacceptable Conditions
Dry swabs, or delayed transport of inoculated MTM agar in non-CO2 environment.
