Specimen Required
Patient Preparation
Plasma separator tube or serum separator tube. Also acceptable: Lavender (EDTA).
Specimen Preparation
Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL serum or plasma to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.2 mL)
Storage/Transport Temperature
Unacceptable Conditions
Specimens obtained through catheters used to infuse hyperalimentation fluid. Specimens collected with potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride or sodium citrate.
Patient age and sex are required for calculation.
After separation from cells: Ambient: 1 week; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 3 months
Reference Interval
Effective August 20, 2018

Interpretive Data
The CKD-EPI equation for non-African American individuals is used to calculate the estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR). To estimate the GFR for African Americans, multiply the provided GFR result by 1.16.

The CKD-EPI equation is validated in individuals 18 years of age and older. It is less accurate in patients with extremes of muscle mass, restriction of dietary protein, ingestion of creatine, extra-renal metabolism of creatinine, or treatment with medications that affect renal tubular creatinine secretion.

GFR Categories in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
GFR Category
GFR (mL/min/1.73 square meters)
G190 or greaterNormal or high*
G260-89Mild decrease*
G3a45-59Mild to moderate decrease
G3b30-44Moderate to severe decrease
G415-29Severe decrease
G514 or lessKidney failure
*In the absence of evidence of kidney damage, neither GFR category G1 nor G2 fulfill the criteria for CKD (Kidney Int Suppl 2013;3:1-150)
