Specimen Preparation

Transfer 1 mL CSF to a sterile ARUP Standard Transport Tube (ARUP supply # 43115) available online through eSupply using ARUP Connect™ or contact Client Services at (800) 522-2787. (Min: 0.5 mL)

Room temperature.

Unacceptable Conditions

Specimens in media or preservatives.

Interpretive Data

The stain will detect free-living amoeba such as Naegleria fowleri and Balamuthia mandrillaris.

The culture will detect free-living amoeba such as Acanthamoeba species and Naegleria fowleri but will NOT detect Balamuthia mandrillaris.
